Before you start
- Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
- Gather your supplies: medication, a new sterile needle/syringe, alcohol swab, and a sharps container.
- Check the medication label, dose, and expiration date. Do not use if discolored or expired.
General steps
- Clean the injection site with an alcohol swab and let it dry.
- Follow your provider's instructions for drawing up and administering the exact prescribed dose.
- Use a new, sterile needle every time — never reuse or share needles.
- Dispose of needles and syringes immediately in an approved sharps container.
When to seek help
Contact your provider for signs of infection (redness, swelling, warmth, pus), a missed or incorrect dose, or any reaction that concerns you. Call 911 or seek emergency care for signs of a serious allergic reaction (trouble breathing, swelling of the face/throat).
